The Menorah
Created and sculpted by Ben Zion Tsfoni in 1993. The Menorah ,which took over five years to create, is situated on the hill at Mt.Herzl, a site of national and historical significance. The Menorah's height is six meters, the base measures 3.5 meters and it's weight is two tons. The material used is stainless steel and glass. Ben Zion used hundreds of gas balloons to create the capitals, goblets, branches and lamps . He welded circles, rings, a thousand petals by a specialized Argon welding method. The Menorah has 7 branches, 3 goblets, beautiful capitals with flower heads. There are additional shafts on the side, thus transforming the Menorah into a traditional Candelabra, Hannukia. Each branch has a reflective mirror which faces the Menorah, shining brilliantly. Ben Zion has created elements of unity and perfection. For example, the candles which are connected by arches symbolize unity strength and beauty. The left side is connected to the right side of the Menorah with exquisite olives and olive branches, in total 360, which is also symbolic of Peace and wholeness. The exterior part of the Menorah is a circle with small arches around it. The Menorah symbolizes light and the arches function as a halo of light. There are 253 Stars of David on the base of the Menorah, thus representing the 253 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The seventh frame symbolizes the 12 tribes of Israel. The combination of all the frames amounts to 541, which represents the word Israel in Geometrics. The base is painted in blue and white, the colors of the Israeli national flag. This work of art is kinetic, which opens up and moves around in different directions. It is operated by a computer. The opening and closing at different positions create a global form. This too symbolizes perfection and completeness. The seven branches of the menorah are symbolic of the seven days of the week. The Argon welding technique creates a rainbow of amazing colors which permeate all the different features of the Menorah. There is a range of symbolic elements such as the national flag, which is positioned as an open book. This hints to us that the Jewish people are the People of the Book. There is also the priest's prayer and the dove, the symbol of peace. The artist describes his work as a symbol of peace, perfection, unity and patience. Peace is represented by olives and olive branches seen on both sides of the creation. Perfection is represented by the globe. Unity is seen at the base of the creation, where all 12 tribes are presented. Patience is represented by the many different Stars of David, which were the result of endless hours of work invested in this Menorah by one sole artist. The Menorah is decorated with many inscriptions and quotations engraved painstakingly by the artist. All these features are an expression of the artist's feelings while creating this masterpiece. The Menorah's shape and magnetic structure attracts and unites the people who come to see it. The Menorah is a perfect creation of art, allowing the observers to identify with what interests and attracts them. The observers can spend a long time understanding all the Menorah's different elements. Whatever I haven't described is left to the observer's imagination and emotions. Written by Sydelle Tsfoni |
